The Night of Decree — better than a thousand months.
Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree (or Night of Power), is the night on which the Qur'an began to be revealed to the Prophet ﷺ. Allah devotes an entire surah to it, opening with: 'Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree' (Qur'an 97:1). Its value is stated in the plainest terms a few verses later: 'The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months' (Qur'an 97:3) — worship on this single night outweighs worship spread across more than eighty-three years.
The surah describes the night further: angels and the Spirit (Jibril) descend during it by their Lord's permission with every decree, and it is 'peace until the emergence of dawn' (Qur'an 97:4–5). It is a night of immense mercy, tranquillity, and divine decree — one the Prophet ﷺ urged his companions to actively seek out rather than let pass unnoticed.
This is why the last ten nights of Ramadan carry such spiritual weight: somewhere among them is a night more valuable than any other night in a person's life. The wisdom in not disclosing it plainly is that believers strive across every one of the last ten nights rather than relaxing on all but one.

Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.
This guide does not endorse a single fixed calendar date or folk 'signs' for identifying the night — only what the Qur'an and authentic hadith state.
